7 Days Kumbh Mela with Varanasi

Overview

The Kumbh Mela is a celebration of the mythical churning of the ocean by gods and demons to obtain the elixir of immortality, amrita. It is held at the four places on earth where drops of amrita fell: Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. During the Kumbh Mela, millions of pilgrims bathe in the sacred rivers.

Itinerary

Upon arrival, meet and greet at Prayagraj Airport/Railway Station and transfer to the campsite. Prayagraj or It had been the ancient name of the city of Allahabad. Pra means “first” and Yag means “devotion”. Prayagraj also signifies the coming together of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. After the Mughal invasion, Emperor Akbar, impressed by the location, named the city Allahabad which meant “Abode of God”. Emperor Shah Jahan, his grandson, renamed the city to Allahabad. This day explores the beautiful campsite with an evening bonfire & music. Explore more of the luxurious campsite & common area. Overnight stay at camps.

This day explore Kumbh Mela areas, exhibitions, visit Maha Mandleshwars Campsite, Akhadas & Temples. The Maha Kumbh Mela, an integral part of Indian tradition, is renowned globally as the largest peaceful congregation of people. The festival is a testament to the human quest for divine and spiritual liberation, representing the belief in freedom from the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth.  It is celebrated in a cycle of approximately 12 years, to celebrate every revolution Brihaspati (Jupiter) completes, at four river-bank pilgrimage sites Prayagraj (Ganges-Yamuna-Sarasvati rivers confluence), Haridwar (Ganges), Nashik (Godavari), and Ujjain (Shipra). This gathering allows millions of devotees to immerse themselves in the holy waters of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati, symbolizing a purification of the soul and, as believed, a path to attaining Moksha or liberation. The Maha Kumbh Mela transcends the worldly and embraces the spiritual, manifesting the richness of India’s diverse cultural heritage and spiritual traditions. It embodies the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, an Indian philosophy meaning ‘the world is one family’, where all attendees, regardless of their social or economic background, are considered equal, thereby reinforcing the sense of unity amid diversity. Moreover, the festival paves the way for various community outreach initiatives such as complimentary medical aid, provision of food, and spiritual guidance. The Maha Kumbh Mela, therefore, is not just a religious gathering but a confluence of faith, spirituality, and humanity, deeply etched in the Indian way of life. Overnight stay at Prayagraj.

In the morning, have breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast, Check-out & Proceed for Varanasi.

Varanasi, or Banaras (also known as Kashi), is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Mark Twain, the English author and poet, who was enthralled by the legend and sanctity of Banaras, once wrote: “Banaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.” The origins of Varanasi, the home of Lord Shiva and Parvati, are unknown. The Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away the sins of mortals.

Upon arrival, Check-in at the hotel. Later in the evening, proceed for the Ganga Aarti at Ghat.

Every evening, Ganga Aarti is carried out in three holy cities of India. They are Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi. All three of them have different vibes and energies. It is said that you should be a part of all three Aartis once in your lifetime. The Aarti is always carried out facing the River Ganga. A lot of lamps are lit during the Aarti. They are usually circled out by priests. It is always done clockwise. The Aarti is always accompanied by different songs sung while praising the Ganga. It is believed that the lamps acquire the power of the deity. Overnight stay at varanasi hotel.

An early morning boat ride tour will give you the real view of holy Varanasi, where you will see the morning rituals, special features of the various Ghats that you will pass along the way and the burning Ghat where the dead are cremated. (Boat Ride at Own Cost)

After your boat ride, visit the popular Kashi Vishwanath Temple + Annapurna Temple. After the temple visit, I returned back to the hotel for breakfast. After Breakfast, Proceed for the Sarnath.

A quiet and spiritual town set amidst the otherwise densely populated state of Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is a city of historical marvel with numerous Buddhist stupas, museums, excavated ancient sites, and beautiful temples that prove to be a source of immense wonder and astonishment to tourists due to their mystical and serene setting. Sarnath, which is only 10 kilometres from Varanasi, is a popular pilgrimage destination for Buddhists, Jains, and Hindus alike. After Sarnath, return back to varanasi. Overnight stay at varanasi hotel.
